Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.
Monday, May 20
UMMC biologists to give WIP talks, Q and A
Two members of the UMMC Department of Cell and Molecular Biology faculty will give "Work in Progress Talks" followed by question-and-answer sessions at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 20, in classroom 3A.
Dr. Michael Hebert, professor of cell and molecular biology, will present "Novel Regulatory Mechanisms That Govern RNA Modifications and miRNA Biogenesis" and Dr. Omar Logue, assistant professor of cell and molecular biology, will present "Maternal Administration of Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA): Optimizing Bioavailability to the Offspring Brain."

Geffen professor to note good, bad, ugly red blood cells
Dr. Jonathan S. Jahr, professor emeritus in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine, Los Angeles, California, will give the UMMC Department of Anesthesiology Grand Rounds presentation, "Red Blood Cells: Good, Bad, Ugly and Solutions," from 6:30-7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, in room LH122 of the medical education building.

MEW club to discuss substance abuse treatment barriers
Dr. Kevin Freeman, associate professor and director of the Office of Medical Student and Resident Research in the Division of Neurobiology and Behavior Research in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, will serve as the discussion leader for the next Health Disparities Journal Club meeting, “Understanding Barriers to Specialty Substance Abuse Treatment among Latinos,” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, in conference room D on the second floor of the student union.

UM biomolecular faculty to talk cancer stem cell drug response
Dr. Pier Paolo Claudio, professor of biomolecular sciences at the University of Mississippi and research professor at the National Center for Natural Products Research, will give the UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute Grand Rounds presentation, “ChemoID – Cancer Stem Cell Drug Response Assay to Personalize Cancer Management and Discover New Anticancer Drugs,” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, in CW 106.

SOM faculty to discuss liver ischemia, reperfusion injury
Dr. Frank Spradley, assistant professor of medicine and director of basic science research in the Department of Surgery and the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, will give the Department of Physiology and Biophysics presentation, "Sex Differences in Live Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

St. Jude deacon to discuss profoundly empty tomb
Dr. John McGregor, St. Jude Catholic Church deacon, will give the UMMC Faith Forum, Center for Bioethics in Medical Humanities and Office of Diversity and Inclusion-sponsored seminar, "The Profoundly Empty Tomb," about the Easter and Pentecost seasons, at noon on Wednesday, May 22, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre).

Yale faculty to tout peds neurosurgery during Andy Lecture
Dr. Kristopher Kahle, assistant professor of neurosurgery and pediatrics at the Yale University School of Medicine, will present the 2019 Orlando J. Andy Lecture and Neuroscience Grand Rounds, "Pediatric Neurosurgery with Molecular Precision," from 8-9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 5, in the Methodist Rehabilitation Bank Plus Conference Center on the second-floor atrium mall.

1 in 100 community event to address congenital heart disease
University Heart and Children's of Mississippi will host a free patient and family symposium, "1 in 100: Growing Up with Congenital Heart Disease," from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 8, in the Classroom Wing.
The event will include a discussion of the challenges of growing up with congenital heart disease and the important of lifelong care, a tour of the Heart Center, an echocardiogram demonstration, information about insurance coverage and interaction with heart doctors.

MIND Center chair to discuss Alzheimer's, dementia research
Dr. Tom Mosley, The MIND Center chair and director, will present “New Research into the Causes of Alzheimer’s and Dementia” during the "Mind Matters" program from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, in the second-floor conference rooms of the student union. Check-in will take place from 5:30-6 p.m.
